Today is MLK Day, a federal holiday observing the birthday of the foremost spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the American civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Although Dr. King, a registered Republican, was born on January 15, the holiday is always observed on the third Monday in January as part of The Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The federal holiday wasn’t an easy one to get passed in Congress. It was initially introduced …

As we approach Thanksgiving, it’s instructive to remember the holiday was first proclaimed by President George Washington as “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer” prompted by the “duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor.” Painting of George Washington praying alone at Valley Forge, said to be based on an actual moment …

“No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.” That now famous quote is attributed to the colorful General George S. Patton. When you think about it there is a lot of truth in what he said. Unfortunately it’s also easier said than done. The cold, hard facts are, in wars people die. Today, November 11th is Veterans Day, a day we have put aside to honor …

My original plan was to make this a non-political column and to address what Memorial Day should mean to this country in the current worldwide political climate. However, there have been so many developments politically in the past week that politics must have its fair say and Memorial Day will be addressed later. Nancy Pelosi’s political standing has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days. The press conference she gave last week was on…

July 4, 1776. One of the greatest days in the history of the human race. For this is the day, that the founders of this country executed the Declaration of Independence and declared themselves free from the British Empire. It is a day that we should be reverent about and a day in which we should remember those who have fallen in order for the ideals of the founding fathers to be upheld. It is a day that the whole world admires whether they be We…

As a child growing up in a small suburban town just outside New York City I always looked forward to “Memorial Day”. Besides the obvious thrill of being off from school, I always looked forward to our “Memorial Day” parade. It stretched half way through the city and included fire trucks, police cars, High School bands, the local chapter of the VFW, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and several sharply dressed military drill teams. Most of the 75,000 that …

A two-man race? Gingrich and Romney mano-a-mano While the fight for the Republican Party nomination seems to have crystallized, congealed or coagulated into a highly personal blood-match between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, it can also be seen as the continuation of a struggle that has rocked the GOP for the last fifty years. The Republican Party has not been truly united since the days of the paternalistic and ideologically neutral Eisenhower…

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the GI Film Festival at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The Festival took place in one day and showed films that portray American enlisted men and women in a favorable light as opposed to the usual Hollywood fare. This festival was an offshoot of the main GI Film Festival which takes place in May every year in Washington D.C. The main event lasts seven days and includes showings of app…

Hey Everyone! This is not a political blog per se. However, it is a piece of Americana and love of country that I think you should all watch. It is a video of VJ Day in Hawaii that has appeared on the internet. There is a song being song by Jimmy Durante on the piece. This little 16 mm film shows the celebrations on VJ Day and gives a good look of what Honolulu was like in 1945. I hope you all enjoy it and I also ho…
