…ned films was a documentary entitled “About Face,” which was directed by Steve Karras. To me, the film is a masterpiece. It depicts a group of Jewish Refugees from both Germany and Austria that joined the American and British Armed Forces in WWII to fight against their native lands. The film was both moving and educational. In fact, I must state I was not even aware there was so many of these refugees. Apparently, they numbered approximately 10,0…

Though he lambasted his opponent Michael Dukakis, tarring him with the “Liberal” label, which Reaganism had turned into a dirty word, Bush himself was every bit a Progressive. … Come on, why do we aspire to a higher status if it does us no good (good restaurant seating aside). As for Police Sgt. James Crowely, I learned my “question authority” lesson years earlier; it is a “no win” to get pissy with armed officers with an empty back seat. This matter was resolved before cameras (but after rehearsals), over beers anyway. Oh yes, did anyone check with MADD to see if alcohol added to this equation is advisable? There was a…

Last Saturday morning, I had the privilege of attending the official commissioning ceremony of the USS Stockdale, a new destroyer named after deceased Admiral Jim Stockdale, a Vietnam War hero and POW that endured torture because of his refusal to capitulate to his captors. This article is going to be relatively short, but I want to say a few words about the pageantry and patriotism of the men and women serving in our Armed Forces, in this cas…

Today, November 11th is Veterans Day, a day we have put aside to honor those American men and woman, both living and dead, who have or still are serving in our Armed Forces. It is a day of remembering; a day of reverence and a day we say “thank you” to all of those who defend our country. The reason Veterans days in The United States, Europe and Great Briton is celebrated on Novem…

…do? Now, for some comments from my readers, Billy Dean Bennett of Missouri sent me some interesting statistics on the effects of the Australian Gun ban. After one year in effect, homicides were up 6.2%, assaults were up 9.6%, armed robberies were up 44% and in the state of Victoria alone, armed robberies were up 300%. All of this after the government of Australian spent more than 500 million Australian dollars on taking the guns away. I guess the…

… of these circumstances, the use of the word hero is trivialized. A deeper problem is that ides of myth, legend and story hold a society’s culture together. The concept of the hero is central to these. By misapplying the hero label and refraining from using it when needed takes our culture in the wrong direction. I hope we can recover the sense of propriety about who we call a hero and what they did to be considered brave before it’s too late. A …
