I live on the Westside of Los Angeles, which means that I am around a lot of incredibly coddled rich people who create problems to be apoplectic about. I am around hysterical environmentalists, hysterical movie stars and hysterical mothers who won’t vaccinate their children because of the mercury in vaccines. Everyone in the third world is totally calm as they’re dying of malaria, consumption, and starvation and Westsiders get their panties in a bunch about paper vs. plastic and hybrid vs. smart cars. Because their incredibly spoiled and whiny voices have been screaming loudly for “something to be done for the environment” regular light bulbs will be outlawed in the state of California at the end of this year.
On January 1, 2012, we will all be required to buy the more “energy efficient” CFL light bulbs. Keep in mind that if everyone in the world changed to these energy saving light bulbs, we would cut emissions by 2/10 of 1% of what they say we need to by the end of the century to circumvent global warming disasters. So changing over to these light bulbs only in the state of California is really going to do a whole lot of nothing but it’s about feeling good, not doing good, right Sheryl Crowe? How’s that one square working out for you? Any rashes? But I digress.
The thing that angers me as a mother is that this environmental hysteria might not only be annoying but dangerous to our children. The vaccines the Westsiders led by Jenny McCarthy are hysterical about contain about .025 micrograms of mercury per vaccine. If you break one of these CFL light bulbs, there is about 4,000 micrograms of mercury emitted: more simply it is almost 100,000 times the amount of mercury in your child’s entire vaccine cycle! IN JUST ONE BULB!
The poison control centers are saying that if you break a CFL light bulb in your house, and don’t clean it up properly it will be very dangerous to your child because mercury is a neurotoxin and there is no acceptable safe level of mercury exposure for your child’s growing brain. This is even worse for babies. They say never to use CFL light bulbs where children might play. They say never to have CFL light bulbs in kid’s rooms or especially not in baby’s rooms because of the potential danger. So in California, I guess everyone with children is just going to have to sit in the dark or use candles (by the way, 2 candles emits more CO2 than keeping all of the lights on in your house for a whole day not to mention the toxins released by the fire, wick material, wax etc.)
To make matters even less reassuring, Poison Control Centers have published a whole list of detailed rules of what to do if a CFL light bulb breaks in your home such as: remove children and pets and open the window immediately. Do not touch the broken glass/residue. Do not vacuum anything up unless you’re planning to throw away the vacuum cleaner because the entire vacuum cleaner will forever be contaminated. Get out of your home for at least a few hours. In other words, THIS STUFF SOUNDS REALLY DANGEROUS!!!!!!! It’s even worse if you break a fluorescent lamp by the way: they say you should replace the flooring that it breaks onto. Also they say the landfill contamination from these bulbs is going to be really bad: it will be a very huge environmental disaster they say if they are not disposed of properly and by properly, they mean in a way so that the glass of the bulb NEVER breaks.
I am so angry that we as a culture have become so hysterical about the imaginary threat of global warming that we are actually going to hurt our children and our environment. There will be children, especially from less affluent areas with parents who did not get the memo on how to clean up the light bulbs or with people who cannot afford to throw away their vacuum cleaner who will get neurological problems. Putting our children in real danger because Al Gore falsified data that said that Manhattan might be underwater in 100 years makes me so mad that I can’t see straight: the global warming debate has gone from theoretical to absurd to dangerous our children.
I am now a mother and my perspective on children has totally changed. I worry about my own child and do what I can to protect her but now that I truly realize how precious and helpless children are, I worry about other people’s children too. What are our children to these environmentalists? Are children just necessary casualties in the crusade to make the earth greener to them? The environmentalists have proven that they are willing to kill children: look at DDT and the children of the Third World. The environmentalists say that the earth is angry with us: that’s all well and good, but the earth’s anger will be nothing compared to the anger of the mothers of children who get sick from these light bulbs and the mothers who watch that happen. By the way, California’s light bulb plan will be implemented nationally in 2014. I hope we can stop it.

increase taxes, increase debt, imposing poisonous light bulbs, gay history to kindergartners, free houses to the homeless, sanctuary cities for murdering illegals… no wonder this is the land of fruits and nuts!
OK, who do I sue??
I was born in Los Angeles at the onset of WWII. My parents worked for Hughes Aircraft after the war. They would frequently bring home here-to-fore never seen clever things for us to play with. One of my favorites was Quick Silver, a liquid Mercury (the stuff that lived in thermometers). I carried it with me for for years, rolling the cute little silver droplets around in my palms until they diminished. I’ll save the asbestos stories for another day.
OK, so I’m not totally convinced of the real danger of Mercury at this point (at least quick silver), and maybe naivete serves me well.
Accepting the danger of Mercury then, shouldn’t the great state of California take into account the fact that we straddle the San Andreas fault (is “fault” PC approved?), and maybe a few light bulbs will get broken when the earth spanks us for our sins?
Yes, West-siders and all-siders, Please start acting like a skunk over these laws forcing us to use these unproven pigtail light bulbs.
California, I’ll keep the lights on for ya’.
