As I look out at the sun slowly rising over the warm Atlantic I think of how relaxing this last week has been. No TV, no newspapers, no news on the radio. Just warm ocean breezes, cool satisfying drinks, good food and quality time with a wife who is constantly pointing out all the bronze skinned ladies in their shrinking bikini’s strolling in and out of the pool and walking on the beach.
When Frank and I first decided to make this website more than it was both of us were writing close to four articles a week. That’s a lot of writing. But we were energized and had a lot to say about what was going on at home and across the world. As our website grew we took on more writers who felt as we did. The website and readership expanded as did our standing in the world of cyber space. Facebook was next, then Twitter, followed by another growth spurt and another addition to the writing staff. Before we knew it our site was turning out several articles a day and attracting new readers by the dozen. Frank asked if I would keep an eye on the Facebook page and I happily agreed. We added content and encouraged debates and never imagined it would take off like it did.
But success is not without its demons. Before we realized what was happening Frank and I began writing less and managing more. It wasn’t until we looked over the monthly statistics that we realized the two of us were only writing about 3 articles a month. I have been a writer all my life. I started writing short stories in Elementary School. On weekends I would sit in my back yard with a spiral notebook and just write all day. I loved it…it was my escape. This passion carried me through Middle and High School and set me on the path I am still walking today. I wrote for my college paper, news copy for our radio station and wrote several scripts for the film majors.
Over the years I have written several magazine articles, had two films produced and done rewrite work for numerous well known production companies. I love to write. So it was a bit surprising to me when I finally realized how little I was actually writing. Writers block? I was lucky in that respect I never had that problem. Laziness? Anyone who has ever written more than one screenplay can tell you laziness is not something a successful writer suffers from. Burnout? Burnout…Ahhhh there’s the rub.
Burnout is something we all suffer from now and again. It is a sign that we are working too hard and not playing enough. It tends to sneak up on you when you least expect it and bite you right in the ass. So when this opportunity to go to Miami and spend a week at the Trump Resort arose it was really a no brainer. The weather in L.A. sucked the weather in Miami was…perfect. Tough choice.
So after a week of pampering, relaxing and drinking am I re energized? To a point. Am I going to turn out three articles a week like I did before? Probably not but I will contribute my fair share to the writing load of the website. What I have also discovered is that I am again interested in writing. Not just articles for the website but short stories and maybe even a couple of new screenplays.
So you will be seeing my name more on the masthead of upcoming articles, however I will be contributing much less to the comment section of our Facebook page. It’s a trade off. But A Hollywood Republican is moving upward. Today we just cracked the one million mark on the list of world wide websites and in the US we have dropped below the one hundred thousand mark. Ain’t too shabby; Nope ain’t too shabby at all.
Okay one last picture…..
