The Young Guns

Frank DeMartini

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending a dinner in which House Minority Whip Eric Cantor and Assistant Whip Kevin McCarthy were the guest speakers.  The two of them, and their partner Paul Ryan, make up a group in the House of Representatives called the Young Guns.  It is a branch of the HRCC whose goal is to aid with electing open seat and challenger candidates throughout the country.  During the course of their comments, the two of them emphasized the work they are doing to bring the Republican Party back into power after two years in exile.  Such work has included meeting and stumping for candidates running for the first time.

In the opinion of this writer, both Cantor and McCarthy represent the future of the Republican Party in the House.  But, is there anyone out there who really knows these two men?  Both keep a relatively low profile, although Cantor will probably be the House Majority Leader should the Republicans take control of the House in January.

Together with Congressman Ryan, the three have written a book about their group entitled, “Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders.”  You can purchase the book at Amazon.com by clicking on the link in the title.  I recommend it as required reading for all Conservatives in the country.  It gives strong incites into where the party is going.

Eric Cantor represents the House Seventh District in Virginia.  He was first elected in 2000 and has been the Minority Whip since 2009.  As stated above, he is primed to become the Majority Leader if Republicans gain control of the house after the November 2 elections.  Currently, he is the only member of the Republican Jewish caucus in Congress which is a fact I find really hard to believe since we have such and anti-Israel Administration right now.

Personally, I have seen Mr. Cantor speak twice and both times have been impressed with his knowledge and his conservative values.  He is not a vocal member of the Tea Party Express but he seems to follow their ideals  and mission statements.  I believe that should he maintain his current position in the party and continue to grow within the party, he will be a strong candidate for the presidency by 2020.  However, he must either get elected to the Senate or become the Governor of Virginia before then.  Members of the House rarely get into the White House directly.

I also believe that should Representative Boehner assume the Speaker’s Gavel, Cantor will work well with him in pushing the Republican Platform and repealing a lot of the damage done by the Far Left in the last six years.  Remember, Congress has been in the control of the Democrats since 2006.  They started damaging the country way before Mr. Obama became President.

In the event that Cantor does move forward to House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy will be primed to take another powerful position in the House right under Mr. Cantor.  McCarthy was first elected to Congress from California’s 22nd Congressional District in 2006 which is in the Central Valley and I believe includes Bakersfield.  He became Deputy Minority Whip in 2009 when Cantor ascended to the position of Minority Whip.

The final member of the trio is Congressman Paul Ryan who represents the first Congressional District in Wisconsin.  He has been in Congress since 1999.

These three men are a powerful force in Congress and will be partly responsible for pushing Congress back to Conservative ideals.   In fact, if the supposed “dead” Republican Party does take control of the House and/or the Senate in 2011, it will be because of the work of these Young Guns.

As you recall, I wrote an article for this column about 18 months ago in which I analyzed whether the Republican Party was indeed dead as so many had predicted after the Liberal landslide in 2008.  At that point in time, I mentioned that we had a few strong people in the party that would lead us back to prominence.  A few of those such as Bobby Jindal have not really borne fruit.  Some, such as Tim Pawlenty have.  And the ever present Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney are leading the way among the old guard.  In the past year, a few new faces have popped up such as Chris Christie from New Jersey and Bob McDonnell from Virginia.

Based upon these stars, the Young Guns, and a few surprises that may come out of the election, I believe we are fine and that after November 2, the party will be completely revitilized and ready for the future.

Well done article Frank. Hopefully those in and running the GOP have got the message, although yesterday there were some rumblings that not all republicans maybe committed to repeal and replacement of Obama deathcare. Today Mitch McConnell had to come out and squelch that rumer. I like Paul Ryan alot and agree that he and the other 2 are a breath of fresh air. Having said that the days of either party going back to politics as usual are OVER. As a proud and active Tea Party Patriot we will be watching them all like hawks. They have all had their chance to be trusted to do what they were sent to DC to do and most have failed. Now it will be ,as Reagan said “trust but verify”. If the new Republicans can’t hang they’ll be replaced again. We’re awake and planning to stay that way.
